The Beluga XL is based on the Airbus A330 and was designed to transport large aircraft components between Airbus manufacturing facilities in Europe. Its cargo hold is designed to accommodate wings, fuselage sections, and other components that are difficult or impossible to transport using conventional cargo aircraft.
Compared to the previous BelugaST, the new generation has 30% greater cargo capacity. The cargo compartment can simultaneously accommodate two Airbus A350 wings, each approximately 30 meters long. The aircraft’s maximum payload is approximately 51 metric tons.
The BelugaXL’s most distinctive feature is its exceptionally large upper fuselage, shaped like a beluga whale. The white livery is complemented by blue “eyes” and a “smile” near the recessed cockpit. This design was chosen by Airbus employees in an internal vote in which nearly 21,000 people participated.
The metal model captures the BelugaXL’s distinctive profile, enlarged cargo compartment, massive doors in the upper fuselage, Rolls-Royce Trent 700 engines, additional tail stabilizers, and the “No. 6” markings. It is one of the most unusual models for a collection of transport and special-purpose aircraft.
