The Boeing 747 is usually associated with long-haul travel, but aircraft N744ST was given a completely different mission—to fight large wildfires from the air. As part of Global SuperTanker Services, it bore the number 944 and the name Spirit of John Muir, dedicated to the famous conservationist John Muir. Its white-and-red livery with a thin gold stripe made this four-engine giant recognizable far beyond the aviation community.
A distinctive feature of this SuperTanker was its pressurized fire-retardant discharge system. The load could be released in stages, spreading it over several passes. According to the CAL FIRE firefighting aviation handbook, the system’s capacity was 19,200 U.S. gallons—approximately 72,700 liters. Fun fact: during the discharge, the aircraft flew with its wing flaps extended, in a configuration similar to a landing approach.
It is precisely this version with extended flaps that the JC Wings model reproduces in 1:400 scale. It captures the distinctive silhouette of the Boeing 747-400: the upper deck at the nose, four engines, and wing tips with wingtips. The fuselage features the registration N744ST and the inscription “Global SuperTanker,” while the red tail fin bears the large number 944.
