The Boeing 747-400 with registration G-BNLY was one of the aircraft British Airways used to celebrate its centennial in 2019. The classic Landor livery was restored for this aircraft, bringing back the recognizable look of British aviation from the 1980s and 1990s to regular routes. After being repainted, the aircraft arrived at London Heathrow on March 9, 2019.
The choice of G-BNLY held special significance: the airline received it in 1993 in the Landor colors. Along with the retro livery, the aircraft was given back the name City of Swansea, which it bore at the start of its service. The anniversary project was a return to its own history, rather than merely a recreation of an old design.
The livery was created by Landor Associates and unveiled by British Airways in 1984. The pearl-gray upper fuselage, dark-blue lower fuselage, red Speedwing accent, and the coat of arms on the tail formed the carrier’s understated look. On the large four-engine Boeing 747, this design became particularly recognizable.
