The Laâyoune 002 lunar meteorite is one of the rarest types of space rocks. Stones break away from the surface of the Moon as a result of collisions with asteroids, where most of them fall into the gravitational field of the Earth or the Sun. After spending a long time in space, orbiting the Earth or the Sun, they fall under the influence of Earth's gravity and fall like other meteorites. Lunar meteorites are fragments of our closest celestial neighbor that were torn from the surface by other meteorite collisions (which also led to the appearance of numerous craters on the Moon), then traveled a quarter of a million kilometers to Earth and, against all odds, survived a fiery descent through our atmosphere to be found by meteorite hunters. We know they come from the Moon because their geological composition is almost identical to samples returned by Apollo.

Mineral composition and geochemistry: Olivine (Fa46.3-46.7, FeO/MnO = 94-98, N = 4), orthopyroxene (Fs33.5Wo3.8, FeO/MnO = 57), pigeonite (Fs36.9-45.1Wo6.5-8. 4, FeO/MnO = 57-64, N = 3), augite (Fs19.1-20.9Wo39.1-39.7, FeO/MnO = 53-54, N = 2), anorthite (An96.1-97.7Or0.3-0.1, N = 3).
